Mazda has revealed its first electric car, the MX-30 electric crossover, which has debuted today at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. The MX-30 is a coupe-like crossover, which is about the same size as the new CX-30.
Mazda clearly wants to position the MX-30 as a sportier electric crossover, since it chose the MX acronym for the name, which has been traditionally used by Mazda’s sports cars, like the MX-5 Miata. In addition to the sleek coupe-like roof, the MX-30 also gets rear suicide doors, like the RX-8 sports car.
The B-pillar less design and half rear suicide doors are meant to ease entry to the rear seat. Once inside you’ll notice some natural materials, like cork.
Mazda hasn’t announced any performance specs for the MX-30, but it does have a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. We just don’t know how much horsepower the front-mounted electric motor generates or how far the MX-30 can drive on a single charge.
Mazda is also taking orders for the MX-30 in Europe, but it hasn’t announced when it will arrive in the US.
