With the growing number of hot hatches, like the Honda Civic Type R and Hyundai Veloster N, VW may be cooking up something good to keep the next-gen GTI on top.
According to Auto Bild, the next-generation VW GTI could have as much as 300 horsepower under the hood, which will be a huge improvement over the current GTI with its 220-hp 2.0L four-cylinder. If the next GTI does get 300 horsepower, that means it will be even more powerful than the current Golf R. The 300 horsepower will probably be reserved for a GTI “Performance” version, since the standard GTI will reportedly only get a smaller boost to 245 horsepower.
While the next GTI may get a nice horsepower bump to help it fight the growing number of rivals, there’s one thing that it won’t offer – all-wheel drive. That means that even with around 300 horsepower, all that power will only be sent to the front wheels in the GTI.
We’ll probably have to wait at least a year until we get to see the next-generation GTI, since it’s debut isn’t expected until sometime in 2020.
