The Volvo XC90 may be one of the oldest three-row luxury SUVs, but it continues to hold a top spot in the segment. Competing with heavyweights like the BMW X5, Audi Q7, and Jeep Grand Cherokee L, the 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge impresses with its timeless styling, impressive electric-only range, and ample space for the family and a comfortable interior.

2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge Review

Volvo hasn’t changed the styling of the latest XC90 since its debut for the 2026 model year, but it has continued to make small improvements and updates to its flagship SUV. The XC90 lineup features three trim levels: Core, Plus, and Ultimate. All trim levels come standard with all-wheel drive, and the top-of-the-line T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid has an electric-only range up to 32 miles, making it a compelling choice if you aren’t quite ready to transition to a fully electric vehicle.

The 2024 Volvo XC90 exemplifies Scandinavian design. Its handsome exterior features an elegant front end and distinctive tall taillights that have aged gracefully over the years. Despite its age, the XC90’s styling remains fresh and appealing. While it maintains a boxy silhouette, the XC90 also exudes a muscular and agile presence for a large SUV. Opting for 21-inch wheels perfectly complements the XC90’s large wheel arches, although smaller wheels with taller sidewalls offer a smoother ride.

Performance-wise, the 2024 XC90 delivers with ample power under the hood. The XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid is the most powerful XC90 available with 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque. The XC90 Recharge is a heavy SUV, but even with all that weight, it can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds, which is pretty fast for a three-row SUV.

Thanks to its 18.8-kWh battery pack you’ll be able to drive up to 32 miles, while its combined fuel economy rating is 27 mpg. On the road, the XC90 is more about composed cruising than performance thrills, particularly with the available air suspension that absorbs rough road surfaces.

2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge Review

Safety is a top priority for Volvo, and the 2024 XC90 excels in this area. It performs exceptionally well in crash tests and comes standard with numerous driver-assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, blind-spot monitors, adaptive LED headlights, and parking sensors. The XC90 also includes Volvo’s Pilot Assist system, which can accelerate, brake, and steer the vehicle for short periods of hands-free driving.

Inside, the XC90 continues to set high standards with its spacious and well-crafted cabin. It offers one of the finest interiors in the luxury SUV segment with room for up to seven passengers, thanks to its Scandinavian design. Its seats are wrapped in an innovative, sustainable wool blend upholstery. The front and second rows offer ample space for adults, but the third row is best for children or shorter passengers. With both the second and third row folded, there’s 85.7 cubic feet of cargo space. With all seats up, there’s 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

While the XC90 Recharge’s interior is nice, its infotainment system feels outdated. The 9-inch vertical touchscreen, is easy to use but it’s not as modern looking as the XC90’s competitors. The infotainment’s response time can be slow and the screen feels tiny. You can also tell its dated, since it doesn’t offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge Review

The pricing for the 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge starts at $73,195 for the base Core trim level, while the top of the line Ultimate trim level starts at $80,895.

The 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge remains an excellent choice for buyers thanks to its timeless styling, luxurious interior and notable electric-only range. The XC90 offers a near perfect blend of performance and elegance, which makes it stand out in the luxury three-row SUV segment.
